Taking Busan bus 1001 or 1003? Bring a loaded transit card. Both are in the city’s 35-route cashless pilot that began October 1, 2026. Cash-only passengers can still board and pay by bank transfer, but preparing a card before the stop avoids having to arrange that fallback.
Busan’s official pilot announcement, published September 10 and checked October 25, 2026, describes a three-month trial. It does not announce that every Busan bus has stopped accepting cash or give a confirmed date for a permanent citywide rollout.
What to have ready before the bus arrives
| What you have | Next step |
|---|---|
| A compatible prepaid transit card with enough balance | Keep it accessible before boarding; avoid searching through luggage at the reader. |
| A transit card with little or no balance | Find a recharge point before walking to the stop. Owning the card alone does not fund the journey. |
| Only a foreign bank card or an ordinary payment wallet on your phone | Arrange a confirmed transit-payment option first. The word cashless is not evidence that your particular card or wallet will work. |
| Only cash | If time allows, buy and load a compatible card. Otherwise ask the driver how to follow the announced bank-transfer procedure. |
A regular Tmoney card is a practical option if you already have one from Seoul. Busan’s transport-card compatibility table includes Tmoney for city buses. That table is labeled January 2023; it is compatibility guidance, not the new pilot’s launch notice. The Korea Tourism Organization’s transportation-card guide says Tmoney and EZL cards can be purchased and loaded at convenience stores nationwide. Both pages were checked October 25, 2026.
For an unfamiliar card, ask the seller to confirm Busan city-bus use and show you the loaded balance. Check how that particular shop or machine takes payment for the recharge before relying on it. A bank card working at a shop is a different question from it working directly on a bus.
If your card is WOWPASS, check the transit side using our WOWPASS and Tmoney balance guide. Do not use a shopping-balance figure as your boarding check.
Is your route in the pilot?
Match the whole route number, including any hyphen, with the official list. For example, 83 and 83-1 are separate entries; 88-1 does not mean every route beginning with 88.
Regular buses — 24 routes: 16, 29, 41, 57, 62, 73, 80, 82, 83, 83-1, 85, 88-1, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 124, 128-1, 184, 188, 190, 300, 583.
Seated buses — 11 routes: 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 3001, 3002, 3003, 3005, 3006, 3007, 3008.
These are the routes in the October 1 pilot notice. For a route outside this list, check its own payment instructions; omission is not a promise that cash will be accepted.
If you reach the bus with only cash
The city calls its fallback “Board First, Pay Later”: passengers carrying only cash may board and settle the fare by bank transfer. That is a payment arrangement, not a free ride.
Tell the driver before trying to pay. A useful phrase is:
교통카드가 없어요. 요금 납부 방법을 알려 주세요.
I don’t have a transit card. Please tell me how to pay the fare.
Ask for the amount, recipient details and payment instructions. Confirm that you can make the required transfer; do not assume a foreign banking app or an international card provides the announced payment method. If you cannot complete it, explain that to the driver and ask what to do. Keep the payment confirmation when you settle the fare.
Airport buses and sightseeing passes are separate decisions
Before using this checklist, identify the service you intend to board:
- A numbered city bus in the list above: prepare its transit payment.
- A Gimhae Airport limousine: use the airport-to-Haeundae bus and train comparison for that service’s payment and boarding details.
- The Busan City Tour Bus: check the sightseeing day-pass and route guide. A city-bus cashless announcement does not establish the terms of a separate tour pass.
For travel after the announced trial period, reopen the city’s notice before departure. Keep your route number, transit-card balance and usable payment method on the same pre-trip checklist.
