Dongdaemun is not one all-night market. If you want fabric or bead-making supplies, Dongdaemun Shopping Complex lists closing times of 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., depending on the section. For ready-to-wear retail shopping, Doota Mall lists 10:30 a.m. to midnight. Nearby wholesale markets serve a different buying purpose; late opening alone does not tell you whether a stall will sell the single item you want.

Official operator and Seoul tourism guidance checked October 25, 2026. All times below are Korean local time. The suggested choices and example visits are our planning judgments, not a report of a personal shopping trip.

Choose the kind of shopping first

What you wantWhere to startConfirm before making the trip
One or two finished outfits, with ordinary retail browsingA retail mall such as DootaThe specific brand or floor, store hours and return terms
Fabric, sewing supplies, beads or components for making accessoriesDongdaemun Shopping Complex — 동대문종합시장The relevant section’s daytime hours and Sunday closure
Clothing sourcing or a particular wholesale sellerThe exact market and stall, such as a seller in Pyeonghwa Market — 평화시장Whether it accepts personal purchases and the minimum quantity for your item

Seoul’s tourism guide distinguishes the area’s retail malls and wholesale markets. “Dongdaemun Market” is too broad a destination for a shopping list. Save the building name first, then the floor and stall if you have one. A recommendation for fabric supplies is not automatically a recommendation for ready-made clothes.

Three destinations, three different clocks

DestinationPublished hours or closureWhat it changes for your visit
Doota Mall10:30–24:00; individual shops and dining outlets can differAn evening retail option, but not an all-night one
Dongdaemun Shopping Complex: fabric and garment materials08:00–18:00; closed SundaysPut this before dinner, not after it
Shopping Complex: accessory-making supplies09:30–19:00; closed SundaysA bead or component shopping trip needs a daytime slot
Pyeonghwa MarketSeoul’s guide lists 22:00–18:00 the following day, with closure Saturday 18:00–Sunday 22:00 and holidaysThe weekday and exact market matter as much as the late opening

Sources: Doota’s official English site, the Shopping Complex operator’s section-by-section hours, and Seoul’s Pyeonghwa Market listing. The Pyeonghwa timetable is from the tourism authority; check the seller’s own opening before travelling for one stall.

The Shopping Complex has a separate rule for home goods: those shops may partly operate on the first, third and fifth Sundays. That does not make its fabric and accessory-supply sections open on Sunday. The operator lists the second and fourth Sundays as full closures. Check its dated holiday notice for additional closures.

What a 9:30 p.m. arrival actually buys you

Illustrative visit, not a guarantee of shop availability: on an ordinary operating weekday, arriving at Doota at 21:30 leaves 2 hours 30 minutes before the mall’s listed midnight close. The Shopping Complex’s fabric and accessory-supply sections have already reached their listed closing times. Pyeonghwa’s published overnight session starts half an hour later, at 22:00.

Change that visit to Saturday 21:30, and Pyeonghwa is inside its listed weekend closure. Simply moving the same plan to “later at night” does not solve the problem.

This is why we would choose the building and shopping purpose before deciding to go after dinner. Leave time to find the shop, examine the item and pay; the mall’s closing time is not a recommended arrival time.

Can you buy just one item at a wholesale stall?

Ask the particular seller. Seoul describes Pyeonghwa as a wholesale clothing market serving merchants. That does not establish one minimum order for every stall, nor does it prove that personal purchases are always refused.

Before comparing a wholesale quote with a retail price, confirm:

  • Whether the seller will sell one piece to you, and the total price for that quantity.
  • Whether a minimum applies by design, size or colour, rather than across everything you choose.
  • Whether trying the item on is allowed, how to check measurements, and the seller’s exchange or return conditions.
  • Which payment methods it accepts and whether the quoted amount is the final total.

Useful questions:

이거 한 개만 살 수 있어요? — Can I buy just one of this?

최소 몇 개부터 살 수 있어요? — What is the minimum quantity I can buy?

If you only want one item and the seller’s terms do not fit, move to a retail option. Buying extra unwanted pieces to reach a minimum can erase the apparent saving. Our Korea shopping cost comparison shows how to compare the basket you actually want. Confirm tourist tax-refund eligibility separately with the shop.

Save the correct name and plan the return

  • Doota Mall — 두타몰: 275 Jangchungdan-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul, as listed on the operator’s site.
  • Dongdaemun Shopping Complex — 동대문종합시장: the operator’s directions use 266 Jong-ro, Jongno-gu and Dongdaemun Station on Lines 1 and 4, exits 8 or 9; exit 9 has an underground connection.
  • Pyeonghwa Market — 평화시장: Seoul’s listing gives 274 Cheonggyecheon-ro, Jung-gu. Keep the exact market name when saving your pin.

Finally, check the trip back to your accommodation. A shop staying open does not keep the subway running. Use the last-train destination checklist before committing to a late finish, and include the cost of your confirmed alternative in the shopping budget.
