For duty-free liquids above 100ml on a connection through Incheon, keep the receipt enclosed in the tamper-evident bag. A receipt on its own is not enough. Korean Air’s Incheon transfer instructions specify both. If your journey also involves security at another airport, check that airport’s rules before buying a large bottle.

Incheon’s restricted-items guide limits ordinary international carry-on liquids to containers of 100ml or less in one transparent 1L bag. An unopened manufacturer’s bottle or a normal shop carrier bag is not the special duty-free packaging.
Do not repackage a large bottle into your own zip bag and assume you have recreated the exception. Ask the retailer for the appropriate packaging for your journey.
Two itineraries where the difference matters
These are hypothetical planning examples, not reports of passengers being admitted or refused.
You leave the airport during a layover
Your suitcase is checked through to the final destination. During a Seoul stop, you buy a 200ml toner from an ordinary store, then return to Incheon for an international flight.
Plan before paying: can you actually collect and recheck a bag before the next security checkpoint? If not, choose a compliant travel-size product or leave the full-size purchase for another trip. You collect an online duty-free order before departure
You collect a cosmetic set in Incheon’s departure area, then fly to an overseas airport where your itinerary involves another security check.
Your checked suitcase is normally already out of reach when you collect the order. Do not plan to put the set into it unless you have confirmed a later baggage-collection and recheck opportunity. Our Incheon duty-free pickup guide explains the collection sequence.
Incheon Airport’s transfer-security guidance specifically warns that foreign airport rules differ and liquids may have to be surrendered. Check the actual connecting airport and airline; a short connection or a single booking reference does not answer that question.
Check the package while the retailer can help
- Show the whole route. Include later connections, airport changes and any planned exit from the secure area.
- Confirm the packaging. Ask staff whether the liquid is in the required security bag and whether the purchase receipt is enclosed.
- Check the contents before final sealing. Resolve a wrong item with staff instead of opening the package later to inspect it.
- Keep it sealed for the remaining journey. Carry any skincare you want to use in transit separately in a compliant travel-size container.
- Keep the package accessible. Present it if requested at screening and follow the officer’s instructions. If staff must open it, explain the remaining connections and ask how to proceed.
The seal does not settle cabin baggage or customs
The liquid-security exception is only one part of the trip. Check the operating airline’s allowance for the combined cabin luggage and shopping; do not assume that a duty-free bag is a free extra piece. Keep import allowances and declarations separate from security permission as well.
If the next checkpoint’s acceptance remains unclear, postpone the full-size purchase or choose smaller containers that meet the ordinary liquid rules. Make that decision while you still have a choice at the shop.
