Before paying for a Jeju rental car, check whether every named driver can collect it. An overseas visitor will generally need an original, valid International Driving Permit (IDP), a home-country driver’s license, a passport and a payment card accepted by the chosen operator. A photo, PDF or privately sold “international driver’s license” is not a substitute for the original IDP at operators such as LOTTE and SK Rent-a-Car. A valid Korean license or another specifically accepted permit may follow a different rule; confirm your own case before booking.
Then compare the final checkout price for the same pickup time, car class and coverage. The cheapest displayed daily rate may exclude a vehicle-damage waiver, and a “zero excess” label does not answer every question about a damaged car. Korea Tourism Organization’s driving guide says rental prices vary by season, vehicle and company and advises checking the insurance scope and total with options.
| Check before paying | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Driver | Original IDP category and validity, original home license, passport, age and experience rules for this vehicle |
| Price | Same dates and hours, vehicle class, discounts, CDW charge, extra-driver/child-seat fees and cancellation terms |
| Damage | Deductible, coverage limit, excluded damage and the separate charge for days the vehicle cannot be rented |
| Airport | Actual shuttle stop, last shuttle, branch closing time and time needed to return to the terminal |
| Return | Fuel or EV charge level, late-return rules and accident-reporting contact |

Documents and age rules for international drivers
The Korea Tourism Organization says short-term visitors using an IDP must be over 21, be within one year of entering Korea, and show a passport or alien registration card. It advises carrying the home-country license too. Operators can apply more specific rules. For example, SK’s English rental requirements list age 21+ for cars with up to nine seats and 26+ for its listed larger vehicles; SK also asks for the original home license to verify driving history. Do not assume an SUV automatically has the larger-vehicle age rule: check the seat count and that model’s booking terms.
For an IDP booking, bring the paper booklet, not a phone image or printout. Check that its vehicle category covers your chosen car and that the name matches your passport. LOTTE’s rental information explicitly rejects IDP photocopies, PDFs and pictures. SK distinguishes an official IDP from an “International Driving License” or an English translation of a local license.
Payment rules differ by operator. SK asks for a credit card in the driver’s name. LOTTE’s published document list describes a debit or credit card issued to the renter, driver or companion. The tourism guide gives the more conservative general advice of a credit card under the driver’s name. If you plan to use a debit card or someone else’s card, get written confirmation from your exact pickup branch before you commit to a nonrefundable booking. Keep all required originals in hand luggage.
Insurance: what does “full coverage” mean in Jeju?
Separate liability coverage for people or property from damage to the rental car itself. The tourism guide says the former is typically included while cover for the rented vehicle may be included or added. The contract, rather than the words “full coverage,” decides what you owe.
| Term on a quote | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Basic insurance | Does it cover damage to this rental car, or only injury and third-party property? |
| CDW / 자차 | What is the deductible (면책금), damage limit and claim procedure? |
| Zero-excess / 완전자차 | Is the deductible zero for every covered incident? Which damage or drivers are excluded? |
| Loss-of-use / 휴차보상료 | If the car needs repair, do you pay for the days it cannot be rented? |
LOTTE’s detailed insurance terms show why the last row matters: its CDW deductible and a compensation fee for an unusable vehicle are separate concepts. Its terms describe a Jeju exception for domestic vehicles other than Hyundai Solati when Zero Excess CDW is selected. LOTTE’s Jeju Auto House page describes that branch’s Full Exemption CDW benefits, including tire and wheel damage. Those are LOTTE product terms, not a promise about every Jeju rental company or vehicle. Read the exact quote and agreement, especially for a foreign-brand car, unlisted driver, single-car incident or damage that was not promptly reported.
If a quote only says “완전자차,” ask for its deductible, maximum cover, exclusions and loss-of-use rule in writing. Do not buy an expensive option solely because its name sounds comprehensive; compare what the additional charge actually changes.

How to compare Jeju rental car prices
There is no honest island-wide “typical 2026 price” without a travel date, vehicle and coverage choice. As one published list-rate example, LOTTE’s English rental-rate table lists a Spark or Morning at ₩115,000 per day for a 1–3 day rental. That is not a live checkout quote or the cheapest available Jeju rate. LOTTE itself labels the table as reference rates; membership discounts, availability, pickup hours, CDW and add-ons can change what a traveler actually pays.
For a useful comparison, open at least two real booking flows, such as LOTTE’s Jeju reservation page and SK’s English booking page. These are direct links to the operators. Enter the same pickup/return dates and times, passenger/luggage needs and driver ages. Then record:
- Vehicle class and whether a specific model is guaranteed.
- Rental price after taxes or required fees, plus the CDW option you intend to use.
- Deductible, damage exclusions and loss-of-use treatment.
- Additional-driver, child-seat and other needed charges.
- Cancellation deadline, no-show rule, fuel/charge policy and airport shuttle hours.
Compare those final totals and conditions, not a banner discount percentage. If an aggregator is cheaper, check which company supplies the car and use that supplier’s current rules for documents, shuttle and insurance. A lower quote is only useful if the driver can collect the vehicle and the pickup time fits the flight.
Jeju Airport pickup: the shuttle is part of the trip
Rental cars are often collected at a company lot after a shuttle, not at the airport curb. For one concrete example, LOTTE Jeju Auto House directs arrivals to its desk near domestic arrivals Gate 2, then to rental-car shuttle Zone 1, No. 4. Its page lists the branch as 06:00–23:00 and shuttle service as 06:00–22:40, with frequency varying by time of day. Those are LOTTE’s published details, not a universal airport shuttle schedule; verify them again with the operator before a late flight.
Allow time for baggage, walking to the shuttle, the ride to the lot, document checks and the vehicle inspection. On departure day, allow the reverse trip before airline check-in. If your plane lands after the final pickup service, ask the company what happens to the reservation rather than assuming an after-hours counter or unattended pickup.
Before leaving the lot, photograph existing damage and the fuel/charge display, confirm every driver is named in the contract, and save the accident-reporting number. LOTTE’s published fuel rule is full-to-full for petrol cars; its Jeju Auto House page says its EVs need not be returned fully charged. Follow your specific contract, not a blanket fuel rule. Ask for an extension before the return time if plans change.

A final decision check
If your route is mostly between a few places served by buses, compare the actual cost and convenience of a car with public transit. If you need several distant stops, a car may be more useful. For navigation, the tourism guide points to Naver Map and KakaoMap for Korean driving directions.
Do not pay until you can answer three questions: Can the named driver present every required original document? What is the final price with the coverage you chose? Can you reach the lot during its actual pickup hours? If any answer is unclear, contact the supplier before booking.
