Paying for your Korea hotel room does not answer whether you need a separate deposit at check-in. Before arriving, confirm the total deposit for your stay, the payment method the property accepts, and when the money will be available again. LOTTE’s integrated FAQ, for example, says it requires a check-in deposit payable by credit card or cash. That is an operator example, not a rule for every hotel in Korea.

Official hotel and card-provider guidance checked October 24, 2026, US Central time. The exact property’s written reply and your booked rate’s terms matter more than another traveler’s experience at a different branch.

Three payments that are easy to confuse

What you are looking atWhat it tells youWhat to check next
Card entered to guarantee a reservationThe hotel has a card connected to the booking.Has the room actually been paid for, or is payment still due?
Room prepaymentThe amount shown as paid covers the items listed on your receipt. Are taxes and selected extras included? Is a separate check-in deposit required?
Check-in deposit or card holdMoney or card capacity may be reserved for the stay.Is it a temporary authorization, a completed charge to be refunded, or cash?

SIGNIEL BUSAN’s FAQ makes the distinction concrete: its website-reservation answer says the card secures the booking and payment is processed at check-in. A separate answer says the room rate and deposit are charged at check-in, with additional services settled at checkout. It directs guests who need to prepay to contact the hotel.

Those answers explain that property’s process. They do not establish the payment schedule for every promotional rate or third-party booking. Open your confirmation and payment receipt, then ask the property about any remaining amount.

Ask about your actual card, not just Visa or Mastercard

A card working for online room payment does not by itself confirm that the front desk accepts it for a deposit. Name the issuer and card type when asking: credit, debit or prepaid. Ask whether a physical card in the arriving guest’s name is required.

LOTTE’s integrated deposit answer names credit card and cash; it does not specify debit or prepaid acceptance, an amount, or a per-night calculation. Get those details from the exact hotel. If cash is an option, confirm the currency, the total to bring and how it will be returned.

Use this message through the property’s official contact channel or your booking’s messaging system. Fill in the dates and card type; do not include a full card number or security code.

I have prepaid the room for [dates]. Is a separate deposit required at check-in? What is the total for my entire stay? Do you accept my [issuer and credit/debit/prepaid card type], or cash? Is this a temporary card authorization or a charge that will be refunded? When do you release or refund it?

A short Korean version:

객실 요금은 미리 결제했습니다. 체크인할 때 별도 보증금이 필요한가요? 전체 숙박 기간의 보증금 총액과 가능한 결제 수단을 알려 주세요. 카드 가승인인지 실제 결제 후 환불인지, 언제 취소 또는 환불되는지도 확인 부탁드립니다.

If the reply only says “cards accepted,” ask specifically about the deposit before relying on that answer.

A refundable hold can still reduce today’s spending money

Wise explains that a pending payment reserves money before the merchant claims it. For its cards, unclaimed funds normally release within seven days, or up to 30 days for pre-authorizations. These are Wise’s published processing windows, not a promise for every card or every Korean hotel.

Hypothetical example — not a hotel’s quoted deposit: your room is already paid, and you have ₩300,000 available for the rest of the trip.

Planning itemAmount
Available before the hold₩300,000
Assumed deposit hold−₩200,000
Available while the hold remains₩100,000
Planned meals and transport₩180,000
Temporary shortfall₩80,000

The deposit is not automatically an extra accommodation cost. The problem in this example is access to money while the hold remains. Replace the assumptions with your hotel’s confirmed amount and your issuer’s available balance or credit information. Avoid planning the next hotel’s deposit around money that has not yet become available again.

At checkout, keep the evidence that resolves a hold

  1. Ask for the final itemized bill. Check the room payment and any extras against what you expected.
  2. Ask what happened to the deposit. Was an authorization released, a completed charge refunded, or cash returned? Keep the relevant receipt or confirmation.
  3. Check the transaction status in your card account. A pending authorization and a completed charge need different explanations; do not assume two visible entries are two settled payments.
  4. Follow your issuer’s process if the amount or timing is wrong. Wise’s guidance says a pending transaction cannot simply be stopped by the customer or Wise; contact the merchant about cancellation. For another card, use that issuer’s own instructions.

A hotel saying it has released the deposit does not establish that the balance is already usable. If the next stay depends on those funds, check the account’s available amount and arrange an accepted alternative with that next hotel in advance.

Finish the booking checks before travel

Once the deposit and payment method are confirmed, compare Seoul hotel areas and the complete stay cost. If someone in the group is 18, check the separate hotel consent and document rules. If the property confirms a cash deposit and your withdrawal fails, use the Korean ATM card-decline checks before trying another machine.
