U.S. Global Entry members now apply for Korea’s Smart Entry Service (SES) through HiKorea. A Global Entry membership is not completed Korean SES enrollment: follow the Korean application’s review and in-person interview steps before relying on arrival e-gates. If you are only wondering about leaving Korea, the departure rule is different.

Official sources checked November 2, 2026. This guide is for U.S. citizens visiting Korea, rather than foreign residents using a Korean residence card. It explains the published process; it does not promise approval or a particular immigration waiting time.

The current application route

Open HiKorea’s Korea–U.S. SES-GE guide and choose “SES for US citizens.” Its change notice moves new SES applications from TTP to HiKorea. Older applications remain viewable through TTP.

The listed sequence is: obtain a GE PASS ID, create a HiKorea account, apply for SES, then await vetting and the result. The SES FAQ says the interview takes place in Korea during enrollment-center hours, with no prior appointment necessary.

Read the instructions attached to your own application before traveling to a center. An account created, an application submitted and an enrollment completed are different milestones. Save the application status and official follow-up instructions somewhere you can reach without relying on airport mobile data.

Check eligibility before starting

HiKorea lists age 17 or older, Global Entry enrollment, a machine-readable multiple-entry passport, biometrics and eligibility checks. It lists exclusions, including residence-card holders. Use its complete eligibility section and self-test before paying; a U.S. passport alone does not establish eligibility.

Do not choose the neighboring “GE for Korean” instructions. Those concern Koreans applying for the U.S. program. They will not tell a U.S. visitor how to complete Korean enrollment.

Arrival, departure and SmartPass are different decisions

What you want to doWhat to check
Use an automated gate when arriving in Korea with a U.S. passportConfirm that your Korean SES enrollment is complete and usable for this passport; otherwise follow the staffed-lane directions
Leave Korea after a short visitShort-term foreign visitors age 17 and older can use automated departure clearance without pre-registration, subject to eligibility
Use Incheon SmartPass for the departure hall or boarding processFollow the separate SmartPass process and keep your travel documents with you

The departure rule comes from the Korea Tourism Organization’s immigration guide. It also lists circumstances that can prevent automated clearance, including fingerprints that the system cannot verify. Being allowed to use a departure gate does not establish that you completed the separate arrival-enrollment process.

For the airport’s face-recognition departure service, see our Incheon SmartPass and passport guide. Installing that app is not evidence of SES enrollment.

Does the 42-country announcement include the United States?

The United States is absent from the 42-country-and-region list published by Korea’s Ministry of Justice. The ministry’s June 2026 explanation shows the expansion in three stages, ending on March 16, 2026. Canada is on that list; the United States is not.

That list and the separate U.S. SES-GE application route answer different questions. Advice from a traveler who registered under another nationality’s arrival procedure may not apply to your U.S. passport. Check the nationality and program behind a tip before copying its steps.

The practical consequence: do not choose a tight onward connection because someone with a different passport cleared immigration quickly. Plan your airport-to-city trip around completing immigration and collecting your bags, with room for delays.

If HiKorea does not accept your application

First check that you selected the U.S. SES application and that the membership and passport information you entered match your official records. If the error persists, use HiKorea’s customer-center link on the guide. Describe the screen and error without posting your passport number or PASS ID publicly.

For payment problems, HiKorea suggests trying another computer or browser where compatibility is the issue. For an existing SES member with a renewed passport, its FAQ directs the member to an enrollment center to update information.

Avoid turning a website error into a guessed eligibility answer. Do not repeatedly pay or submit new applications simply to see whether the next one works. Keep the official confirmation from any completed step and ask the program to clarify an unresolved status.

Plan the airport visit separately from your flight connection

Incheon’s automated immigration page lists registration centers at Terminal 1, third floor opposite check-in area H, and Terminal 2, second floor in the Immigration Service Center, with hours 07:00–18:00. These are Korea local times, KST. Check the current center listing and your application instructions before setting aside time for a visit.

The airport page also says registration at departure inspection is for departing passengers. Confirm with the center that it handles your SES-GE interview before making a special trip. The location listing is not a promise that an unregistered arriving traveler can interview before passport control or use an arrival gate immediately.

For a first visit, keep two plans on your phone:

  • Arrival plan: your accommodation address, transport options after baggage collection, and a flexible departure from the airport.
  • Enrollment plan: application status, the correct terminal and center, required documents from your instructions, and time to return to your other commitments.
