Still waiting until one month before your trip to book KTX? Your train may already be on sale. From October 1, 2026, Korea’s general rail-ticket booking window expands to two months before departure. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s October 1 update confirms the change for domestic and international travelers.
KORAIL’s English ticketing guide, checked October 8, 2026, lists the normal opening time as 07:00, two months before departure. The KORAIL Pass guide now also gives pass holders a two-month seat-reservation window. Set your reminder using Korea Standard Time (KST) and check the current release notice for your journey.
What changed, and why it matters for your trip
| Booking question | What to use now |
|---|---|
| How far ahead do general tickets open? | Two months before departure, under the new rule |
| What is the normal release time for ordinary tickets? | 07:00 KST; a special release notice can set another time |
| Does this guarantee a seat? | No. Check the actual train and available seats |
| When do KORAIL Pass seat reservations open? | Two months before departure; buying a pass and reserving a seat remain separate steps |
The practical risk is an outdated calendar reminder. If you wait for the old one-month date, other passengers may have had an extra month to choose their departure. That matters most when your itinerary depends on a particular train, such as a morning ride followed by a timed activity in Busan.
Opening earlier does not establish that tickets are selling out faster. This is a change to when you can start looking. Availability still depends on the route, date and service. Once your trip dates are firm, compare the trains that are actually offered before committing to a tight connection.
Example dates for your booking reminder
Use calendar months when planning. These examples apply the published two-month rule for ordinary tickets; they are planning calculations, subject to the release schedule shown by KORAIL.
| Intended departure | Normal opening date under the new rule |
|---|---|
| December 10, 2026 | October 10, 2026, at 07:00 KST |
| December 25, 2026 | October 25, 2026, at 07:00 KST |
| January 15, 2027 | November 15, 2026, at 07:00 KST |
For a return trip, make a second reminder for the return date. A ticket for the outward journey gives you no reserved seat on the way back. For month-end dates, holiday sales or timetable changes, use the current official notice instead of extrapolating a date that the calendar cannot support.
If you are abroad, label your reminder KST. A phone calendar set to your home time zone can otherwise put you on the booking page at the wrong hour.
KORAIL Pass seats now open two months ahead too
The KORAIL Pass guide, checked October 8, 2026, now says seat reservations become available two months before departure, with up to two reserved tickets per person per day. The earlier one-month wording on that page has changed; both official guides now state a two-month window.
For a pass you already own, add your actual travel date in My Ticket, then return to the pass list and choose Seat Reservation. Buying the pass alone does not hold a seat. Check the train and date available in that screen, especially if a fixed departure is essential. The general ticket guide specifies 07:00; the pass guide states the two-month window without separately specifying an opening hour, so follow any current pass notice rather than assuming that detail.

Before you pay: a short booking check
- Open KORAIL’s official English booking site and check its notices for your travel date.
- Search the exact departure station, destination, date and number of passengers. Check both the outward and return journeys.
- Compare the departure and arrival times with your hotel location and the rest of your day. Keep room for the transfer from the station.
- Read the final fare and current cancellation conditions. KORAIL’s ticketing guide says cancellation charges vary with timing and travel period.
- After purchase, check the booking in My Ticket and keep the retrieval details accessible. Buying a pass and reserving a seat are separate steps.

Checked October 8, 2026. Both KORAIL ticket and pass guides now state a two-month window. This guide explains those published rules. It does not claim that a particular departure has available seats; use KORAIL’s live search for that decision.
