Do not assume that two suitcases plus a backpack are automatically allowed on KTX. KORAIL’s English carry-on guide says an individual passenger may bring no more than two luggage pieces, must be able to carry them independently, and must keep seats and aisles clear. It does not state a separate airline-style personal-item allowance. Consolidate your packing or confirm your exact combination with KORAIL before travel.

Official guidance checked October 22, 2026. This guide concerns ordinary personal luggage.

Start with the bags you will carry separately

The KORAIL carry-on and lost-property guide is the source for the two-piece rule. A flight ticket’s baggage allowance does not establish what you can bring onto a train.

For planning, count every separate bag before deciding that your load fits the rule:

Your packing planSeparate piecesWhat to check
One suitcase + one backpack2Can you carry and stow both without obstructing anyone?
Two suitcases + one backpack3Do not assume the backpack is exempt; consolidate or ask KORAIL.
One large suitcase + one small suitcase2The count alone does not establish safe fit or manageable weight.

This is a conservative packing count. The English page does not define a separate small-handbag exception, so ask about your actual items if that distinction matters. A shopping bag picked up after packing also needs somewhere to go; leave room inside your existing luggage instead of relying on another loose bag.

Will a 28-inch or 32-inch suitcase fit?

The checked English guide does not give a universal suitcase dimension or weight limit. That is not permission to bring an item of any size. Its self-carrying and non-obstruction conditions still apply.

A suitcase’s advertised inch size is a poor basis for a storage plan. Measure its actual exterior, including wheels, handles and an expanded compartment. Then try moving it while also carrying the rest of your luggage. If you cannot control the whole load through a doorway, change the plan before reaching the platform.

For an unusually large case or bulky equipment, send KORAIL the dimensions, weight, number of pieces and train details when asking whether it can be carried. Do not substitute an airline’s 158 cm allowance or a traveler’s successful trip for confirmation about your own bag.

Your seat choice does not solve every luggage problem

Look for the designated luggage space on your actual train and ask the attendant if you cannot find a suitable place. Avoid relying on a universal “best row”: KORAIL operates different train designs, as its official train-fleet guide shows.

Treat a seat reservation as a reservation for you, not proof that an oversized case will fit nearby. Buying a more expensive seat is not a substitute for checking baggage acceptance and storage. Keep the aisle and doorway usable, and do not place luggage on a passenger seat. If an overhead space is available, use it only when the bag fits securely and you can lift it safely.

Keep your passport, medication and valuables accessible. Label your suitcase discreetly and check its tag when collecting it. Before your stop, account for every bag without blocking other passengers trying to leave.

Carry everything, leave a bag, or arrange delivery?

The useful question is whether you need all your luggage at every stop. Choose the plan around where you will finish the trip:

Your itineraryPlan to compareConfirmation needed before relying on it
Seoul → Busan → the same Seoul hotelLeave the main case and take a smaller travel bagThe hotel agrees to the full storage period, any charge and your collection time.
Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan, with no return to SeoulCarry a manageable load or investigate a separate delivery serviceExact destination, delivery date, bag acceptance, price and receiving hotel’s agreement.
A sightseeing stop before the next trainStation-area storageA space that fits, opening hours and enough time to return before departure.

Example: for a three-night Busan side trip returning to the same Seoul hotel, pack what you need for those nights in one suitcase or bag and carry a daypack. If the hotel explicitly agrees to hold the other case, you avoid moving it on both train journeys. This is a planning option, not a promise that hotel storage is free or available.

Delivery also needs its own booking and timetable. Do not assume a bag will travel on your train or arrive at your hotel when you do. Keep essentials with you until the confirmed delivery time. For storage choices and collection planning, see our Seoul luggage-storage guide.

Save this before you leave

Record your train number, carriage, seat, date and bag description. If you leave an item behind, KORAIL advises contacting the station office or train attendant promptly; the train and seat details help locate it. Its listed English customer center is +82-1599-7777.

Before buying the ticket, settle the bag plan alongside the route: compare KTX with the Seoul–Busan express bus and check the current booking-window guidance. Your final checklist is simple: number of pieces, ability to carry them, safe storage, and a workable trip from the arrival station to your hotel.
