Missing your KTX does not automatically mean losing the entire fare. For an ordinary KORAIL ticket, request a refund promptly: the normal cutoff is the arrival time printed on that ticket, and the deduction increases as time passes. Go to a KORAIL station ticket counter; an eligible KORAIL+ purchase has a short app exception explained below. Do not assume the missed ticket lets you board another train.
This guide covers ordinary individual tickets bought directly from KORAIL. A rail pass reservation, group ticket or third-party purchase needs its own conditions. Official guidance was checked October 23, 2026.
First, identify which clock you are looking at
The KORAIL refund FAQ says a missed train’s ticket can be cancelled at a station counter before its ticketed destination arrival time, with a deduction based on when you request the refund.
Read these three details from the issued ticket:
- Departure: the date and time of the train you missed, at your boarding station.
- Arrival: the arrival time at the destination printed on that ticket.
- Train and journey: train number, origin and destination, so staff can identify the right booking.
The cutoff is not when you eventually reach the station, when a replacement train arrives, or the end of the day. Present the ticket or purchase record promptly. Ask staff to confirm the refund amount and the valid ticket you need for your onward journey.
Website refund or station counter?
KORAIL’s English ticketing guide directs website customers to MY TICKET before departure and to a station counter after departure.
There is a narrower exception on its Korean purchase/refund page: a KTX ticket bought through KORAIL+ can have its refund request accepted in that app up to 10 minutes after departure, if the system confirms you are not on the train. This is not a promise that any website ticket can be refunded online after departure.
If that app route is unavailable or the window has passed, use the counter. A failed attempt is not a completed refund request; keep the confirmation when the cancellation succeeds. For a third-party booking, contact the issuing seller promptly and show the booking details to station staff; do not assume its service fees or refund process match a direct purchase.
What percentage is deducted after departure?
The operator’s general individual-ticket table shows the following. These are deductions, not the percentage returned to you.
| Time after your ticketed departure | Mon–Thu* | Fri–Sun, public holidays and Seollal/Chuseok periods |
|---|---|---|
| First 20 minutes | 15% | 30% |
| After 20 minutes, up to 60 minutes | 40% | 40% |
| After 60 minutes, before ticketed arrival | 70% | 70% |
| After ticketed arrival | No normal refund | No normal refund |
*The holiday category takes precedence over the weekday column. The arrival cutoff also takes precedence: a short journey does not give you 60 extra minutes to apply after it has arrived. Do not wait for a band boundary; staff apply the current rules to the actual request time and ticket.
A hypothetical ₩50,000 ticket
Suppose an ordinary Friday ticket cost ₩50,000, departed at 10:00 and had a ticketed arrival of 11:05. These are invented times and a sample fare, not a current train quotation.
| Refund requested at | Deduction | Amount returned |
|---|---|---|
| 10:18 | 30% = ₩15,000 | ₩35,000 |
| 10:40 | 40% = ₩20,000 | ₩30,000 |
| 11:02 | 70% = ₩35,000 | ₩15,000 |
| 11:06 | After arrival cutoff | No normal refund |
In this example, waiting from 10:18 to 11:02 reduces the refund by ₩20,000. Your real calculation must use your receipt, travel-day category and request time.
Keep the replacement ticket separate in your budget
A refund request does not reserve a seat on the next departure. Confirm the actual train, date, station and seat or standing status before boarding. If services are full, our KTX sold-out guide explains the different ticket types to ask about.
Using the sample above, a ₩35,000 refund and a hypothetical ₩60,000 replacement leave total spending of ₩75,000: ₩50,000 originally paid + ₩60,000 new ticket − ₩35,000 returned. That is ₩25,000 more than the original plan. Keep the refund confirmation separate from the new ticket, and check the eventual credit rather than assuming money is already back on your card.
At the counter, you can say:
기차를 놓쳤어요. 이 표를 환불하고 다음 열차표를 살 수 있을까요? I missed my train. Can I refund this ticket and buy a ticket for the next train?
For a return from an event, leave a buffer in your festival travel plan. If the last suitable train is full, compare the actual station and terminal connections in our Seoul–Busan train versus bus guide. A rail-service cancellation or disruption is a separate situation: ask KORAIL which rule applies instead of automatically using this missed-train calculation.
