For one free evening, choose the area that contains the thing you most want to do. Hongdae can fit a café-and-music plan, Itaewon a particular dinner or bar, and the COEX area an indoor shopping-and-library visit. Visiting all three can use much of the evening on transfers.
These are planning suggestions, not a ranking of neighbourhoods by price or safety. Official location information checked October 3, 2026. Use the actual venue address and current transport route for your date.
Choose an anchor, not just a district name

“Gangnam” can refer to a large area or to the area around Gangnam Station. A booking near that station is not automatically close to COEX, Garosu-gil or Apgujeong. Save the full address before comparing accommodation or meeting points.
Hongdae: decide whether you want a daytime walk or a booked night
The area around Hongik University contains shops, cafés and music venues, but a neighbourhood description cannot promise a particular street performance. If live music is your main interest, check a venue’s actual event listing, entry conditions and start time.
For a daytime option, the city tourism guide places Gyeongui Line Book Street by Hongik University Station Exit 6, at 35 Wausan-ro 37-gil. Its Hongdae Mural Street guide describes artwork dispersed among streets and residential buildings, rather than a single fixed exhibition route.
A useful plan is one of those walks, a café and a meal. If you add a paid performance later, leave a break and check its finish time. Respect residential entrances and avoid blocking lanes for photographs.
Itaewon: pick the restaurant before the journey
Seoul’s official Itaewon guide identifies the area around Itaewon-ro in Yongsan-gu and the Line 6 stations. Its mix of restaurants can make it useful when your group has a particular cuisine in mind, but a district’s reputation does not establish any individual menu’s dietary suitability.
Check the restaurant’s own booking link or listed reservation channel. Confirm party size, last order, minimum spend if any and cancellation terms. Do not assume a delivery app offers table reservations or that an old coupon service still operates.

COEX: a specific destination within the wider Gangnam area
The mall’s official directions give 513 Yeongdong-daero and access from Samseong and Bongeunsa stations. Use the entrance closest to your destination inside the complex; indoor walking still takes time.
Choose the library and shops if that is enough for your day. An aquarium, exhibition or other paid attraction has separate admission and operating conditions. A mall visit does not require buying a sightseeing pass.
Location correction: Achasan Mountain is in the Gwangjin area, across the river from Gangnam. Plan it as a separate hiking destination, not a quick walk out of COEX.
See what transfers do to a short evening
Illustrative time budget: you have four hours, from 18:00 to 22:00. Two cross-city transfers of 45 minutes each, plus one hour for dinner, leave only 90 minutes for everything else. Those transfer durations are sample inputs; use a current route estimate for your actual venues.
Keeping one area removes the need to protect several connections. It also lets you change cafés or leave a venue without abandoning the whole evening.
For spending, add the menu or ticket price, optional purchases and return transport. Do not rely on fixed US-dollar conversions or an old subway/taxi fare quoted in a blog. The cheapest meal can cease to be the cheapest evening when it requires a long paid trip home.
Decide where to stay separately
