Entered the wrong side of a Seoul subway station? On eligible services, tapping out and back into the same station and line within 15 minutes can avoid another base fare. The clock runs from your exit tap. Check the gate’s line and your card before crossing; a station name alone is not enough.
There is a useful 2026 change: the rule expanded to KORAIL-operated metropolitan subway sections on June 20. An old list limited to Seoul-operated sections can now leave out eligible journeys. This guide was checked October 23, 2026, using the official sources linked below.
At the wrong gate: decide before tapping out
First look for a signed passage to the other platform inside the paid area. If you cannot find one, show station staff your destination and ask which gate to use. Keep your original transit card ready.
For the 15-minute rule, check these conditions together:
| Check | What you need |
|---|---|
| Place | Return through a gate for the same station and same line |
| Time | Re-enter within 15 minutes after tapping out |
| Card | Use your transit card for both exit and re-entry; keep the same card |
| Journey | The benefit is available once during a subway journey |
| Operator | Your section must participate; see the exclusions below |
Seoul’s original policy announcement explains the same-station/line, card and one-use conditions. Its original ten-minute limit was extended to fifteen minutes from October 7, 2023. Re-entry counts as a transfer; distance-based extra fares can still apply. This waives a repeat base fare, not the cost of the whole journey.
Tap again when re-entering. Walking through without a recorded entry is not the way to receive the benefit. If the gate rejects the card, use the help button or find staff instead of trying successive gates.
What changed in June 2026?
The government’s 2026 policy guide lists the additional KORAIL metropolitan sections:
- KORAIL portions of Lines 1, 3 and 4;
- Gyeongui–Jungang, Suin–Bundang, Seohae, Gyeonggang and Gyeongchun lines.
The rule already existed on participating Seoul services, including Ui–Sinseol and Sillim. Seoul’s English transport page still labels its section list October 7, 2023; read it with the newer expansion rather than treating it as a complete 2026 network list.
This concerns metropolitan subway travel. A KORAIL name on a train does not make it a subway service: ITX-Cheongchun needs its own train ticket.
Where the 15-minute benefit does not apply
The transport ministry’s June 2026 notice excludes these services from the expansion:
- AREX airport railway, Sinbundang Line, Gimpo Goldline, Uijeongbu Light Rail and Yongin EverLine;
- Incheon Lines 1 and 2;
- Line 7 between Kkachiul and Seongnam (석남), operated by Incheon Transit.
Do not carry the Seoul rule over to a different operator or city. Ask staff about that service’s own arrangements before leaving the paid area.
Single-journey tickets and commuter passes are excluded from the automatic transit-card benefit. The ministry directs those passengers to call staff for assistance through the emergency gate. Do not open it yourself. For tourist pass coverage and purchase decisions, use our separate Climate Card versus T-money guide; pass validity is a different question from pay-as-you-go re-entry.
Three examples: same clock, different outcome
These are hypothetical gate decisions, not timed station walks. Assume an eligible transit card and an unused re-entry benefit.
| Example | Decision |
|---|---|
| Tap out of Line 2 at 14:00; return through Line 2 gates at the same station at 14:10 | Within the limit on a participating service |
| Tap out at 14:00; return at 14:16 | Outside the 15-minute benefit; expect a new base fare |
| Tap out of Line 2; enter another line at the same interchange ten minutes later | Does not meet this same-line rule; follow signed transfers or ask staff |
The same-line condition does not mean you must keep traveling in the same direction. Seoul’s illustrated re-entry guide uses the example of crossing to the other platform through gates. Check the station name, line number and next station for your intended direction before the next tap.
If you first entered at 13:30, rode to another station and tapped out there at 14:00, the fifteen-minute window starts at 14:00, not 13:30. Aim to return comfortably within it; queueing or searching for a gate still takes time.
A Korean sentence to show station staff
반대편 승강장으로 가고 싶어요. 개찰구 밖으로 나갔다가 이 카드로 다시 들어와도 되나요?
“I want to reach the opposite platform. May I go out through the gates and come back in with this card?”
Show the card and destination along with the sentence. For a toilet break, replace the first sentence with 화장실에 가고 싶어요. (“I’d like to use the restroom.”) Our subway and bus phrase guide covers the next conversation if you have boarded the wrong train or need to confirm your stop.
Before leaving a paid area, remember station, line, card and time. If one is unclear, a staff check is more useful than another experimental tap.
