A bigger discount is not necessarily a cheaper purchase. Compare the same product, size and quantity after confirmed discounts and applicable refund procedures. Then add the cost of reaching the store or collecting the order. Leave unwanted bonus items out of the saving.
This guide is for visitors making ordinary personal purchases. Official event and tourism guidance checked October 3, 2026; individual eligibility and store offers still need confirmation.
Use a like-for-like basket

Illustrative calculation, not live retail prices: Store A sells 50 ml for ₩20,000. Store B sells the same 50 ml plus another 30 ml for ₩28,000. A costs ₩400/ml; B costs ₩350/ml, a 12.5% lower unit price. But B requires ₩8,000 more cash. If you will only use 50 ml, the extra quantity may not justify the spend.

Tax refund is a separate check
Korea Tourism Organization’s tax-refund guide distinguishes immediate refunds at participating stores from later refunds. Its eligibility rules include qualifying visitor status, purchases of at least ₩15,000 and export within three months. Opened/used goods and purchases under a corporate name are among its exclusions.
For immediate refunds, the guide states a transaction must be under ₩1 million, with a qualifying trip total of ₩5 million or less. Confirm the current rules and your eligibility with the store/refund provider. Passport verification and the correct documents matter; ordinary receipts are not necessarily refund vouchers.
Record the refund amount the provider actually confirms. Do not automatically subtract 10% from the sticker price, claim a second refund on a price already reduced at checkout, or treat a Korean refund as settling import obligations at your destination.
Where should you shop?
Choose by what requires inspection, not by a blanket “cheapest district” ranking.
- Cosmetics: compare the exact set and formula at the retailer and brand’s official channels. Test shade/texture only with hygienic store testers; do not open your purchased refund-eligible goods prematurely.
- Clothing and shoes: try the size, inspect seams/materials and ask about returns before paying. Similar styling does not prove equivalent quality or authenticity.
- Crafts and gifts: ask who made the item and what materials are used. Keep fragile-item packaging and allow for luggage space.
- Electronics: check voltage, plug, language/region restrictions and warranty service in your home country before comparing price.
A distant outlet can make sense for a planned basket. It is less compelling for one small discount after transport and time. For an unfamiliar online store, confirm visitor payment support, delivery date, receiving address and return arrangements before ordering to a hotel.
Check the year on a sale banner
The official Korea Grand Sale page lists the next event as December 23, 2026–February 13, 2027, while retaining an archive for December 17, 2025–February 22, 2026. Those are different editions. Neither gives every traveller a guaranteed percentage reduction on their entire trip.
Use an event as a way to find an eligible offer for something already on your list. Check the participating store, dates, exclusions and actual checkout price. Do not build a shopping budget around a blanket “up to 40% off travel” promise.
A receipt-level budget you can use
For each purchase, write item + quantity + paid amount + confirmed refund + delivery/extra travel cost. Keep a second column for the home-country price of the same item if you have one.
Set the basket before browsing. If an offer makes you buy an extra product, ask whether the total would be lower without it. There is no minimum $300–$500 shopping spend needed to enjoy Korea.
