With ₩25,000 left on a normal T-money card, try a participating CU or emart24 before GS25. Seoul’s 2026 tourist guide lists a ₩30,000 ceiling for the first two chains, while GS25’s limit is less than ₩20,000. The balance can fit one store’s rules and exceed another’s. Check the amount before making a refund stop part of your airport plan.

This guide covers a working, standard physical T-money card. Sources checked October 22, 2026. Climate Card, mobile-wallet products and damaged cards need their own refund instructions. A published chain limit does not guarantee that a particular counter can process your card when you arrive.

Which refund counter fits your balance?

The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s 2026 English tourist guide, printed page 55, gives these limits:

Refund locationPublished balance limit
CU or emart24₩30,000 or less
7-ELEVEN₩20,000 or less
GS25Less than ₩20,000
Subway station information centers₩50,000 or less

For station help in Seoul, start with a staffed T-money service center on Lines 1–8, the network identified in that guide. Do not assume every railway ticket counter or airport station offers the same service. Above ₩50,000, the guide directs readers to Tmoney Town near Seoul Station, bank ATMs or the mobile app; check the requirements before choosing one of those routes.

Exactly ₩20,000 matters: it is outside the published GS25 limit but within 7-ELEVEN’s. At ₩25,000, CU or emart24 is the more useful store to check. These are comparisons of the published limits, not reports of a refund we personally completed.

How much cash will you actually receive?

The operator’s convenience-store guide separates the remaining loaded balance from the price paid to buy the card. The card purchase price is not included in the refund, and a service fee may be deducted. Ask the counter to confirm the fee and cash amount before processing it.

Use this simple check:

Cash back = refundable remaining balance − the applicable refund fee.

Do not add the original card purchase cost to that result. Also avoid treating the maximum accepted balance in the table as the cash you will receive: a ceiling describes which cards a counter can handle, not a refund bonus.

If you only have a small amount left, compare the cash you would recover with using it for something you already need. Tmoney’s guide confirms spending at participating convenience stores as another option. Ask whether the specific store accepts the card before selecting goods. Buying unwanted items just to empty the balance is not a saving.

A departure-day plan that keeps your last fare covered

First choose how you will pay for the final journey. If you still need T-money to reach the airport, do not cash out its balance before arranging that fare. If you already have a separate train or bus ticket, confirm that it covers the journey you intend to take.

Then work through four checks:

  1. Read the actual balance. Ask a cashier to check it; Tmoney also lists subway facilities as balance-check locations. Do not estimate from the amount you originally loaded.
  2. Choose a suitable counter before travelling there. Match the balance to the table, then leave time for a different participating store or staffed station office if needed.
  3. Ask about the fee and result. Confirm the amount to be returned and whether any balance will remain. Do not build your onward journey around an assumed partial refund.
  4. Keep a separate way to pay for anything still ahead. This includes the last local connection, not just the main airport train or bus.

For example, a traveller with a separate airport ticket and ₩25,000 remaining can check a CU or emart24 near the hotel before departure. A traveller using that balance for the airport ride should plan the refund after the ride, or arrange another payment method first. These are planning examples, not verified counter availability or fare quotes.

Can you leave the refund until Incheon Airport?

Do not rely on the word “airport” to remove the balance limit. Confirm a participating counter in your terminal, its accessible area and its ability to refund your card before depending on it. A shop selling transport cards is not, by itself, proof that it will process your refund.

Our practical preference is to check the balance and suitable locations while you still have time in the city, then decide how to handle the final fare. If you choose an airport counter, build it into your schedule before it competes with check-in, security or boarding.

At the counter, you can show: 티머니 잔액 환불할 수 있나요? — “Can I get a refund of my T-money balance?” Follow with 수수료는 얼마예요? — “How much is the fee?”

For the journey itself, compare AREX Express and All Stop or check the airport-bus ticket and T-money rules. If you are still deciding which card to buy, the Climate Card versus T-money calculation answers that separate question.
