Your WOWPASS shopping balance can show ₩50,000 while its Tmoney balance is still ₩0. They are separate balances on the same physical card. Before adding more money because a subway gate rejects the card, check the Tmoney amount. Loading the shopping balance alone does not fund the next ride.

Which balance are you trying to spend?

WOWPASS’s official usage guide, checked October 23, 2026, distinguishes these payment methods:

What you want to doBalance to checkOperator’s payment instruction
Make an ordinary store card paymentWOWPASSInsert the card’s IC chip into the reader
Pay a supported subway or bus fareTmoneyTap the card on the transit reader

At a shop, explain that you want to pay with the WOWPASS card’s chip. A balance displayed in the app is not enough to diagnose a failed transaction: first identify the balance and payment method being used.

What moving ₩10,000 actually changes

Illustrative ledger, not a recommended travel budget: assume you start with ₩50,000 in WOWPASS and nothing in Tmoney, then complete a ₩10,000 transfer with no additional charge.

StageWOWPASSTmoney
Before the transfer₩50,000₩0
After the transfer₩40,000₩10,000

The combined balance is still ₩50,000. The transfer reallocates money; it does not add a new ₩10,000 to your trip budget. Use the actual amount and any fee displayed before confirming your own transfer.

This distinction also changes a shopping decision. If you planned to buy a ₩45,000 item using the WOWPASS balance, the example’s remaining ₩40,000 would be insufficient for that full payment, even though the two balances still total ₩50,000. Keep a separate line for transport in your shopping budget.

Two ways to fund the Tmoney side

The Tmoney Top up tab of the official usage guide currently describes an NFC transfer from WOWPASS in the app, plus Korean-won cash top-ups at subway stations and convenience stores.

For the app route, the English service guide gives this sequence:

  1. Open the Tmoney section and select its top-up option.
  2. Scan the physical WOWPASS card with a compatible phone’s NFC reader.
  3. Choose Top-up with WOWPASS and enter the amount.
  4. Scan again as instructed and keep the card in place until completion.
  5. Read the resulting Tmoney balance before returning to the gate.

That detailed guide displays an update date of November 4, 2025; the current website confirms the NFC method. Follow the prompts in your installed app if labels differ. This feature is described for the Tmoney component of WOWPASS cards, not for topping up any unrelated transport card you happen to own.

The same service guide says the reverse transfer, Tmoney back into WOWPASS, is unavailable. Plan the amount you need for upcoming rides instead of moving the entire shopping balance just to test it.

Still seeing zero or a failed payment?

Use a short diagnosis before repeating the top-up:

  • Gate says insufficient balance: check the Tmoney amount and whether the last transfer completed.
  • Store payment fails: confirm the chip payment method and WOWPASS amount with staff.
  • App cannot complete the scan: follow its device/NFC instructions. The cash top-up route is an alternative if you need to travel now.
  • A debit appears without the expected new balance: save the time, amount, receipt and error message, then contact WOWPASS support before repeating a transaction.

These checks narrow the problem; they cannot establish why every failed transaction occurred. This guide is based on operator instructions, not a test purchase or a promise that a particular phone or bank card will work.

Keep the two balances separate when leaving Korea, too

WOWPASS’s Balance Protection and Precautions section says a replacement card can restore the protected WOWPASS balance, but a lost card’s Tmoney balance cannot be recovered that way. Its Tmoney refund process also uses designated refund locations.

Before your last travel day, write down both balances and your remaining journeys. Consult the Tmoney refund counter guide and the operator’s current instructions for your card. Do not count on one refund action clearing both balances.

If you are still choosing a transport product, the Climate Card vs Tmoney comparison addresses fares and coverage. Here, the practical first step is simpler: read the label beside the balance before adding more money.
